Applications for the 2024 Muscatine-China Friendship Education Study Abroad program opened on September 1. Sponsored by the Sarah D. Lande Education Co. and Wanxiang American Corporation, the program allows students to spend four weeks abroad exploring Beijing, Hangzhou, and Shanghai, China, with other students from the US during the summer of 2024.
Participants will learn about Chinese language, culture, and green energy technology at Wanxiang Polytechnic. Students will also have the opportunity to visit historical and cultural sites significant to the curriculum.
Scholarships are open to current 10th-12th grade Muscatine High School (MHS) students, 2023 MHS graduates who participated in the Chinese Language Program, and current Muscatine Community College (MCC) students residing in Muscatine County. Previous Chinese language study is not required for current MHS or MCC students. Students with a cumulative MHS GPA of 2.0 or higher or a cumulative MCC GPA of 2.5 or higher are eligible to apply. Applicants must also demonstrate a sincere interest in learning about Chinese language, culture, and clean energy science.
“The Community Foundation of Greater Muscatine is excited to work alongside the Sarah D. Lande Friendship Education Co. to provide this opportunity to students. This program is a testament to the long-standing friendship and collaboration between Muscatine and China which will enable students to discover China’s culture, language, and innovation. We believe this educational program will enrich the lives of our students,” said Ali Vargus-Stogdill, Philanthropy Specialist at the Community Foundation of Greater
Muscatine.
Students are expected to obtain their own passport, pay a $200 nonrefundable deposit upon being selected for the program, and provide their own personal spending money. All other expenses, including airfare, accommodations, and meals are covered through the scholarship.
Applications must be submitted by Wednesday, November 1, 2023 at noon. Students will also be required to submit a video essay and two letters of recommendation. Those interested can find more information and apply online at www.givinggreater.org/china.
