Dr. Jim Yong Kim, a Muscatine High School graduate and former President of the World Bank, returned to his hometown from October 10-12, 2024, to champion mental health initiatives and reconnect with old friends. During his visit, the Community Foundation of Greater Muscatine held two impactful events focused on mental health, along with a meet-and-greet.
Community Conversation about Mental Health
A Community Conversation about Mental Health took place on October 10, 2024, in the Muscatine High School Auditorium, bringing together community members for an important dialogue on mental health issues.
Keynote speaker Dr. Jim Yong Kim addressed the global mental health crisis, sharing his personal journey and the transformative experiences that inspired his work in this vital area. Dr. Rima Afifi provided insights into mental health initiatives at the state level, discussing key risk and protective factors, healthcare access challenges in Iowa, and the stigma surrounding mental health, while highlighting opportunities for improvement. Alma Brunson delivered a profoundly moving account of her daughter, Micaela, who tragically lost her life to suicide at the age of sixteen, reminding attendees of the real and personal impact of mental health struggles. Ben Pohl emphasized actionable steps individuals can take within their families and communities to improve mental well-being. After the conversation, the speakers engaged in a Q&A session, collaborating to answer questions and foster a meaningful dialogue with the audience.
This event underscored the importance of open conversations about mental health and the need for collective action to foster a supportive community. “If you are struggling with your thoughts or if you are having a hard time, please reach out and ask for help,” urged Alma Brunson. “There is no shame or weakness in asking for help.”

Meet-and-Greet with Dr. Kim
Old friends, fellow graduates of Muscatine High School, and community members gathered on October 11, 2024, for a special meet-and-greet with Dr. Jim Yong Kim at the Community Foundation of Greater Muscatine. Attendees enjoyed food, drinks, and lively conversation as they reconnected.
Dr. Kim was thrilled to reunite with classmates, including one he hadn't seen in forty years. During his time at Muscatine High School, Dr. Kim was an exceptionally active student, excelling in Model UN, sports, serving as valedictorian, and leading as president of the student council. The gathering was a heartfelt celebration of shared memories and the enduring bonds of friendship.
Golf Tournament Fundraiser for Mental Health
On October 12, 2024, Geneva Golf & Country Club hosted a successful Golf Tournament Fundraiser dedicated to supporting mental health initiatives. Generous contributions from corporate sponsors and individual donors through sponsorships, raffle ticket purchases, and mulligan sales were instrumental in the event's success. Participants enjoyed a perfect day on the course, all while raising awareness and vital funds for this important cause.
