We are pleased to announce the development of a new housing project aimed at increasing access to quality, affordable rental housing for a select number of families whose children attend Jefferson Elementary School in Muscatine. Construction of the homes is the focus of a pilot initiative funded through a $1.25 million grant from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust.

Stable housing is a critical foundation for academic success. Safe and consistent housing fosters better school attendance, improved concentration, higher achievement, and significantly increased graduation rates, providing children with a pathway to reach their full potential. “We at Jefferson School fully support this housing project and are excited for the stability and opportunities it will bring to our students and their families, helping them thrive both in and out of the classroom,” said Kandy Steel, Principal of Jefferson Elementary School.
A partner in this initiative is HNI Corporation, which generously supported the project through the donation of land at the corner of Orange and Fifth Streets. This contribution underscores HNI’s ongoing commitment to strengthening the Muscatine community.
“The Carver Trust is grateful for HNI’s willingness to collaborate with the Trust and the Community Foundation on this important opportunity for some deserving Jefferson students and their families who face very challenging circumstances with their existing shelter,” said Troy Ross, CEO of the Carver Trust.
“HNI has long supported education in the community. The donation of land for housing in support of community education continues our commitment to the local community,” said Jeff Lorenger, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of HNI Corporation.
The project will provide three family housing units, each featuring three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and shared outdoor space. Construction begins this month, with completion expected in late fall 2025.
“Safe, stable, and affordable housing is essential to the well-being of families and the success of our children,” said Ron Monahan, Director of Housing Initiatives at the Community Foundation of Greater Muscatine. “Investing in a comprehensive housing continuum in a rural community with supply-side failures not only alleviates community distress, but also fosters stability, supports workforce recruitment, and stimulates economic growth.”
