Ignite Vitality: Mulberry Pocket Park Opens, Honoring Muscatine Firefighter Mike Kruse

A once-empty lot in the Mulberry neighborhood has been transformed into a new pocket park, thanks to the Ignite Vitality: Mulberry project. The park is a space for neighbors to gather, children to play, and the community to connect.

The colors you’ll see throughout the park weren’t chosen by chance—they were voted on by Jefferson Elementary students. Their input gave the project a playful, kid-inspired personality that makes the park feel welcoming to all ages.

Adding to its meaning, the park carries a name close to Muscatine’s heart. It has been dedicated to fallen firefighter Mike Kruse, honoring his service, sacrifice, and deep commitment to our community. His legacy now lives on in a place that brings people together.

Along with playground equipment, the pocket park also offers free public Wi-Fi, helping neighbors stay connected.

“This project is about more than just creating a play space—it’s about creating opportunity,” said Jodi Royal-Goodwin, Community Development Director for the City of Muscatine. “When we invest in safe, engaging spaces for kids, we are investing in their success and in the vitality of our whole community.” 

This new pocket park is just one of many steps in Ignite Vitality: Mulberry, a collaborative neighborhood revitalization pilot project aimed at maximizing quality housing, strengthening neighborhood identity, supporting businesses, improving infrastructure, and enhancing family connection.

Residents are encouraged to stop by, enjoy the space, and celebrate this special milestone.

The park was made possible through funding from the Iowa Economic Development Authority to the City of Muscatine and the Rotary Club of Muscatine.
