Susan Clark Junior High Students Present Recommendations for Future of Towhead Island

Updated: 3 days ago

June 5, 2026 MUSCATINE, Iowa Nearly 120 Susan Clark Junior High students shared original data science research projects at the Reinvent Muscatine Civic Data Science Fair. Their research focused on the future of Towhead Island, a 129-acre island in the Mississippi River, recently donated to the Community Foundation of Greater Muscatine.

Students in Pamela Joslyn’s Technical Innovations classes worked in teams over the past six weeks to identify research questions, conduct surveys, speak with subject matter experts, analyze data, and develop evidence-based recommendations related to the island.

The students’ projects explored a wide range of topics related to how Towhead Island could be developed and used in the future, including ecological restoration, water quality, feasible access and transportation methods, recreation opportunities, “Leave No Trace” camping, wildlife population tracking, invasive plant removal, and educational experiences for all ages.

Community members and school district leaders reviewed student-created display boards, data visualizations, and presentations. The event highlighted the impact of data science as a tool for student learning and community problem-solving. Through the process, students gained experience in research, data analysis, collaboration, communication, and applying evidence to real-world decisions that will help shape future planning for Towhead Island.

"Connecting students with real subject matter experts transformed this project — the data came alive in a way a textbook never could. Knowing that these kids can have a genuine voice in the future of Muscatine is incredibly powerful." — Pamela Joslyn, Technical Innovation Teacher, Susan Clark Junior High School.

The gift of Towhead Island was made possible by the generosity of donors through the Joe W. and Betty L. Rauch Memorial Fund.
