The Community Foundation of Greater Muscatine and our affiliate, the Community Foundation of Louisa County, are honored to steward a remarkable legacy gift that will impact generations to come.

Through the thoughtful estate planning of Andrew Hafner, ownership of a farming corporation—including more than 300 acres of productive crop ground—has been entrusted to the Community Foundation to carry forward his philanthropic wishes.

This gift established three permanent endowment funds that will provide annual support to local and national charitable organizations:

  • Andrew C. Hafner St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Inc., Endowment Fund supports research of children’s illnesses, diseases, and like childhood health problems.

  • Andrew C. Hafner Louisa-Muscatine Community School District Scholarship Endowment Fund supports scholarships for Louisa-Muscatine High School graduates who demonstrate financial need.

  • Andrew C. Hafner Letts United Methodist Church Endowment Fund supports repairs, maintenance, and upkeep of the church.

When the Community Foundation receives a gift of property, ownership of the land transfers to us, allowing the land itself to continue giving back. The Community Foundation may retain and farm the property, using annual income to strengthen local communities, support nonprofits and scholarships, and advance causes that reflect the donor’s values and vision.

In this case, the land is currently being farmed locally, with proceeds dedicated to fueling the charitable purposes that Andrew designated. By turning his life’s work into a lasting gift, his legacy of faith, education, and compassion will continue to grow—just as the fields have for generations.

“This is a powerful example of how local assets can be transformed into enduring community impact,” said Sarah Schoer, Manager of Philanthropy at the Community Foundation of Greater Muscatine. “Donor foresight not only honors their personal story but also strengthens the future of our region and beyond.”

Through thoughtful planning and partnership with the Community Foundation, donors can shape a legacy that reflects their passions while continuing to support the causes and places they love.
